I guess I’m just going to talk about some old games that had been popular(cough cough I’ve definitely not run out of ideas)
(Also spoilers, duh)
Your dear childhood friend Sayori brings you to the Doki Doki literature club, or DDLC. You talk to the girls and write poems to each other and get ready for the festival!
Or so you think…
Each of the girls in the clubs hides a deep secret…
DDLC is a visual novel where you meet all the girls and talk. Choosing what you say and do can lead you to three different endings. What is different, creepy, weird, etc. about this game from other visual novels is how the files can be automatically added and removed. In the beginning, it may seem innocent and happy; Talking to the girls and get to know them, and writing a poem choosing words that you can choose three out of the four girls to show it to. This is very important as it is going to be the plot of the game. This game heavily relies on breaking the fourth wall, which is what gives it the horror element.
Let’s talk about the story, which is basically the spoiler. As I have already mentioned, you, the male protagonist, was brought to the club by your childhood best friend, Sayori. In the club, you meet Natsuki, Yuri, and Monika.
Writing poems are a big element of the game because the girls’ poems reveal a lot about themselves and the troubles they are going through. It is quite concerning. As the days of the festival come closer, Sayori’s poems seem to change, a lot. It shows how she is suffering from depression and loves the protagonist.
When the day of the festival gets even closer, her poem is trying to tell something to get out of her head. One day, the protagonist didn’t get a text, so he goes to Sayori’s house, to find her hanging in her room. The game starts to glitch and it brings you to the main menu, with previous game files deleted. Sayori’s name is glitched and the game restarts with no trace of Sayori’s existence. Spoopy. This is not the only death that you would see. Yuri stabs herself and Nasuki’s neck snaps. Monika apologizes and deletes Yuri’s and Natsuki’s character files.
The game restarts again, and you are seated in front of Monika. Monika explains how she had changed the character’s personalities and changed the files. She confesses her love to not the protagonist, but you, the player. When you go and delete Monika’s files, she would accidentally delete the game’s world. She apologizes and brings back the other girls and deletes herself. She truly loves you.
